Presidents Corner – Summer 2024

Greetings Fellow Club Members,

Hope everyone is making the best of this unusually hot summer season and getting out on the river somewhere. As of this writing, there are numerous multi-day excursion trips that are happening right now or will be taking place very soon. Such rivers, OWA folk’s are planning on floating this summer is the Selway, Middle Fork Salmon, Main Salmon, South Fork Salmon, Lower Salmon Canyon (Club Trip), Hells Canyon, Rogue, Yampa, Green, Tatshinshini and other awesome river canyons in our big adventurous back yard of the Western U.S. and Canada.

I’d like to remind those club members who have a multi-day river trip coming up and are interested in checking out the club’s extensive First Aid Kit and AED Unit, that they send Steve Oslund an email and reserve the units at their earliest available time. There has been several folk’s asking for the use of the Wilderness First Aid Kit and AED Unit, only a couple days prior to their planned launch date. Unfortunately, this is to short of notice for either Steve or other individuals who must handle and account for the contents of the first aid kit and AED units. If you reserve the club’s First Aid Kit and AED in advance and your trip becomes canceled or terminated, please notify Steve Oslund at your earliest opportunity so that other club members have a chance to reserve them.  You can check out the First Aid Kit and AED Unit by sending an email to firstaid(at)oregonwhitewater.org

We have several OWA board positions coming open by the end of this year because some of the individuals in these following positions, President, Membership Director and Secretary are finishing up their second term and cannot run for a third term. Elected OWA Board Members are only allowed a two term limit for each position. Unless, the board votes to reinstate an individual in their current position until someone else steps up to fulfill the board position. If you’re interested in volunteering in the club or have questions regarding the board positions, please reach out to a board member or myself at hadjimann(at)yahoo.com.

A quick reminder that the 2024 Wilderness First Aid course will be lead by Travis Reid of Oregon Rescue and the training course will be taking place the first weekend of October 5th and 6th 2024. We will not be able to utilize the McIver State Park this Fall for our training course because the State Park will be closing down some of their facilities early this year due to renovation work. The exact location for the Wilderness First Aid training site has not been determined yet, but will most likely be at Dodge Park again this Fall. Once all the training details have been finalized, an email with a sign-up attachment and the training course location will be sent to all club members through the H2Oaddicts email.

The club’s first meeting after the Summer hiatus will be on September 11th starting at 6:00 pm. Willamette Park in West Linn will be the location for the September Club Meeting and Swap Meet that will be at the main pavilion this year on the corner of 12th St and Volpp St. Pizza and Refreshments will be provided by the club.  Bring any new or used boating gear that you don’t need or use anymore and would like to either sell, trade or simply give away the item to a club member who could put it to good use. The weather’s still relatively nice this time of year for an outdoor meeting. Also, the pavilion we rented this year for our gathering is larger.

Enjoy this year’s Summer boating season and be safe out there!

Cheers and Safe Boating,

Scott Harvey, OWA President
